About Riverwest, Wisconsin
Riverwest was once a separate town called Humboldt. In the 1830s, Byron Kilbourn designed a dam here for a planned canal to the Rock River. The canal was never built. Its dams later powered a factory district instead, and Humboldt was platted in 1850.
Polish immigrants settled Humboldt in large numbers by the 1880s. They built St. Casimir Catholic Church, finished in 1901, with its famous mismatched twin spires. They called the hill along the river Zagora, meaning beyond the hill.
