About Rock, Kansas

Rock is a community of 94 people in Cowley County, Kansas. Homesteaders started claiming land in the area around 1869, and the town's post office opened a year later, on August 12, 1870.

In 1877 a company called the Florence El Dorado and Walnut Valley Railroad built a branch from Florence to El Dorado. In 1881 the line was pushed on to Douglass and later to Arkansas City, and Rock became one of its stops. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe ran the branch under a lease, and a Winfield Daily Courier supplement of March 14, 1901, called Rock an important trading point on the Santa Fe's Florence Branch.

  • Five businesses in 1882By 1882 the young town had five places of business. Along with the post office, there were a blacksmith shop, a wagon shop, a grocery store and a stone quarry.
  • Evacuated in 1978On August 24, 1978, a major oxidizer spill struck a Titan II missile site numbered 533-7, which lay 2.5 miles south of town, and everyone in Rock had to leave. Two airmen of the 381st Strategic Missile Wing died in the spill. Their wing was based at McConnell Air Force Base, about 20 miles away.
  • A pump station named RockIn 2010 the Keystone XL Pipeline was laid north to south about 2.5 miles west of town, amid arguments over its tax exemption and fears of a leak. A pumping station built along the pipeline was named Rock.
