About Rockmart, Georgia

Rockmart is a town of 4,732 people in Polk County, and part of it reaches into Paulding County. It grew up as a depot town after the Southern Railway built a station here, and it was incorporated in 1872. The town took its name from the large slate deposits found in the area.

The railroad kept Rockmart connected for close to a century. The Southern Railway's Ponce de Leon and Royal Palm, two named trains between the Midwest and Florida, stopped here into the 1960s, and the Seaboard Air Line's Silver Comet stopped in town on every run between Atlanta and Birmingham. The Passenger and Mail trains 5 and 6 ended in 1968, and the Seaboard Coast Line dropped the Silver Comet on May 30, 1969.

  • A school that burned twiceThe Methodist North Georgia Annual Conference founded the Piedmont Institution in 1889. It closed after 23 years in 1912, when the Rockmart School Board of trustees bought it. That same year the Georgia Legislature created the state's public schools, and Rockmart opened its own school system in the old building. Rockmart High School met there until a fire destroyed it in 1915. It was rebuilt and burned again in 1940, and the Rockmart Governmental Complex now stands on the lot.
  • One high school in 1965Before integration, the town ran two high schools. Elm Street High School served Rockmart's African American community, and Rockmart High School served white students. Some African American students began attending Rockmart High in 1964, and the schools were fully integrated in 1965, when Elm Street High School closed.
  • Standing in for DeerlakenJon Stewart produced the movie Irresistible here. Crews filmed in Seaborn Jones Park, at Rockmart Middle School and in the historic downtown, which played the fictional town of Deerlaken, Wisconsin.
  • State champions in 2013The new Rockmart High School was built without a performance space, so its drama students stage their shows in the historic Rockmart Art Center Theatre. In October 2008 the Thespians won the Region AA One Act Competition with Godspell, and in 2013 they took the top prize at the state level, winning the State AAA One Act Competition.
