About Rockwall, Texas
Rockwall is the seat of Rockwall County, near Lake Ray Hubbard at the intersection of State Highways 66 and 205. Established in 1854, the community took its name from a buried stone formation discovered three years earlier. Its development from a farming center and rail shipping point to a city of 47,251 residents in 2020 reflects several eras of local growth.
- Founding on a HillElijah Elgin donated 40 acres above the East Fork of the Trinity River, where Rockwall was established on April 17, 1854.
- County Seat Since 1873When the state created Rockwall County from part of Kaufman County in 1873, Rockwall became the county seat.
- Rail and CropsThe Missouri, Kansas and Texas line reached Rockwall in 1886, making the town a shipping point for cotton, wheat, and corn.
- Lake Era GrowthPopulation growth quickened during the 1970s and 1980s, influenced by nearby Dallas business opportunities and the construction of Lake Ray Hubbard.
- Historic Methodist ChurchThe First Methodist Church of Rockwall was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.
