About Rome, Illinois
Jefferson Taliaferro laid out Rome on the Illinois River and filed its plat in 1832. The town grew quickly for several years. By 1835 steamboats landed there regularly, and about 300 people lived in town. Rome was then the most important point on the river for many miles. Its first school was taught by a one-armed soldier named James Pierce.
The 1832 plat of Rome was one of the earliest village plats recorded in Peoria County. Its streets along the river were named Front, Second, Third and Fourth. The cross streets bore the distinguished names of Caesar, Pompey, Anthony, Octavius, Cato, Cicero and Brutus.
- Rome's moment as a freight hubRome was once the head of navigation for all freight moving by rail and river. A railroad had quarreled with the city of Peoria over terminal rights to reach its steamboat landing. So a spur track was built to the river at Rome, along with a large warehouse on the bank. Freight between the boats and the railroad passed through it.
