About Roselle, New Jersey
Roselle is a borough of 22,695 people in Union County. The Roselle Land Improvement Company was formed in 1866 to plan a community beside Mulford Station, a stop on the Central Railroad of New Jersey, and the new town took the company's name. Accounts differ on whether that name honored the company's founder, John Conklin Rose, or John Pierre Roselle, who was friends with the president of the railroad.
On January 19, 1883, Roselle became the first place in the world to run an electric lighting system on overhead wires. Thomas Edison built it to prove that electricity could light a whole community, and its success led many other villages and cities to put in electric lights. Two days after a referendum, on December 20, 1894, Roselle was incorporated as a borough from parts of Linden, during the wave of new towns in New Jersey known as Boroughitis.
- A church lit by Edison's powerThe First Presbyterian Church stands on the corner of Chestnut Street and West 5th Avenue. No other church in the United States had electric lights before it did, and only the City Temple church in London got them sooner.
- Warinanco Park, since 1920Union County created Warinanco Park in 1920. It covers 205 acres and runs along the line between Roselle and Elizabeth.
- The Roselle House Music FestivalEvery July, Warinanco Park hosts the Roselle House Music Festival. It celebrates the Jersey sound, a soulful style of house music with gospel roots that took shape in New Jersey in the 1980s.
- First woman mayor in 2015In March 2015, Mayor Jamel Holley left office to fill an open seat in the New Jersey General Assembly. Council President Kim Shaw stepped in as acting mayor and became the first woman to lead the borough. She held the post until Dansereau took the oath of office on March 11, 2015.
