About Ross, Ohio
Ross is a community of 3,478 people in Ross Township, on the southern border of Butler County. Dr. Benjamin Franklin Clark laid out the settlement on February 1, 1817, and called it Venus because he found the spot pleasant and its surroundings beautiful. Over the years people came to spell the name Venice instead.
That spelling caused a problem, because Ohio already had a post office named Venice, up near Lake Erie. The answer came from Dick's Mills, which had kept a post office since January 15, 1819. On July 3, 1834, that office moved to Venice under the name Ross, and the village has gone by Ross ever since.
- A log school around 1814Ross Township's first schoolhouse went up about 1814, a few years before Dr. Clark laid out Venice. Settlers built it of hackberry logs, twenty feet on each side, and gave it a puncheon floor, a stone fireplace for heat and seats made of slabs.
- Home of the RamsRoss Local Schools teach children from Ross and the rest of Ross Township on three campuses, from kindergarten through 12th grade: Morgan Elementary, Elda Elementary, Ross Intermediate, Ross Middle and Ross High. Their teams play as the Rams in the Southwest Ohio Conference.
- Along the Great Miami RiverRoss faces Hamilton County's Crosby and Colerain townships across the county line to the south. The Great Miami River runs along its southeastern side, and U.S. Route 27, on its eastern side, carries travelers south to Cincinnati and north to Oxford.
