About Rothsville, Pennsylvania

Rothsville is a community of 2,960 people in Warwick Township, Lancaster County, and its Pennsylvania German name is Haasebarig. The village began around 1790 with a tavern kept by Philip Roth, an early settler, and it still carries his family's name.

About 1845 the stage route between Lititz and Reading was shifted so that it crossed Rabbit Hill, and the village gained a post office called Rothsville. Later the Columbia and Reading Railroad came through and built a Rothsville station about a quarter mile north of the post office. The railroad gave the village a new push, and it grew quickly.

  • Philip Roth's crossroads tavernAround 1790 Philip Roth bought roughly eighty acres where the road from Lititz and New Holland met the Newport road. He opened a tavern at that junction, and the village that formed around it was named in honor of the Roth family.
  • From rail line to rail trailPassenger trains served the station on Rothsville Station Road until 1952. Today the Warwick to Ephrata Rail Trail follows the old railroad bed through the north side of Rothsville, connecting stretches of track that are still in use in Lititz and in Ephrata.
  • Bounded by creeksCocalico Creek and its branch, Hammer Creek, form Rothsville's northeastern edge and its line with Ephrata Township, while Lititz Run marks the southwestern edge. Both Cocalico Creek and Lititz Run feed the Conestoga River, which carries their water southwest to the Susquehanna.
