About Rouzerville, Pennsylvania
Peter Rouzer laid out Rouzerville in 1868. Five years earlier, on the afternoon of July 4, 1863, local citizens helped Union forces capture nine miles of Lee's wagon train. Lee was then retreating from Gettysburg.
Shockey's was the first Underground Railroad station in Pennsylvania. It stood near the present village of Rouzerville, at the foot of the mountain. Freedom seekers who reached it were guided north to a barn, where they were fed and guarded during the day.
