About Roy, Montana
Roy began as a post office on the ranch of W. H. Peck. Peck meant to name it Ray, but a mistake in Washington made it Roy. The present town was founded in 1913, seven miles from the old Peck ranch. The post office moved after the ranch was sold, and again when the railroad came.
Peck's first Montana job paid 35 dollars a month on a sheep ranch. He soon bought his own band of sheep from pioneer sheepman Paris Gibson. After herding them through two winters, he settled on Box Elder Creek. There he opened the Roy post office on his ranch and served as its first postmaster.
