About Russell, Kansas

Russell is a city of 4,401 people and the seat of Russell County, in the Smoky Hills of north-central Kansas. The Butterfield Overland Despatch kept a short-lived stage stop called Fossil Creek Station near here in 1865, and two years later the Kansas Pacific Railway built its own Fossil station just to the north. On April 19, 1871, a colony of Wisconsin settlers, organized at Ripon as the Northwestern Colony Association, arrived at Fossil Station.

The colony's trustees first looked for a site about five miles east, closer to the middle of the county, hoping to win the county seat. They dug and bored there without finding water, so they came back. The railroad gave them one quarter section, and because their rules required at least 320 acres, trustee chairman Benjamin Pratt bought the quarter just south of it. Surveyors laid out Russell that April and May, and by the end of 1871 about 200 people lived in the new town.

“In December, 1871, the first hotel in town was opened, by Stillman Mann, in a small frame building which he had erected on the corner of Main and Ninth streets.”

  • The first house and storeH. W. Tustin and Stillman Mann put up the first house on the townsite, a 16x16 foot shanty that held both families and fed colonists who slept in the railroad cars. Tustin bought a small shanty store by the tracks that had supplied railroad employees, added the goods he had brought, and opened Russell's first store. Some colonists had carried ready-made houses with them, so the place soon looked like a village.
  • County seat since 1874Russell was named the provisional county seat in 1872, but it had to fight Bunker Hill for two years before winning the seat for good in 1874. With no proper courthouse, the county commissioners bought H. C. Waterman's large frame building at Main and Seventh, turned its ground floor into county offices and held court in the hall upstairs.
  • A blacksmith's stone houseNicholas Gernon, a blacksmith and one of Russell's original settlers, built a limestone house in 1872 that also served as his smithy. The Russell County Historical Society restored it as an example of the town's early stone homes, and the Nicholas Gernon House joined the National Register in 2022.
  • Volga Germans and oilBeginning in 1876, Volga Germans, most of them from around Saratov and Samara in Russia, settled in and around Russell. The county's first discovery oil well was drilled west of town in 1923, and the boom that followed lasted through the 1930s, drawing newcomers from Oklahoma and Texas. Oil has been part of the local economy ever since.
  • Bob Dole's hometownBob Dole was born and raised in Russell and kept it as his official home throughout his political career. In the mid-1990s, when he and fellow U.S. Senator Arlen Specter, who also counted Russell as his hometown, both ran for president, the town drew national attention.
