About Rutherford, Pennsylvania
Rutherford is a community of 5,765 people in Swatara Township, Dauphin County, about 8 miles east of downtown Harrisburg. Many people know the area as Rutherford Heights, and it has kept growing, from 3,859 residents in 2000 to 4,303 in 2010.
The place carries the name of the Rutherford family. Thomas Rutherford, a pioneer born in Cookton, County Tyrone, Ireland, joined his son John in 1760 to buy a farm of nearly 400 acres in Paxtang, and the Rutherford stop on the Philadelphia & Reading railroad was later built on that same ground.
- A house older than the RevolutionCapt. John Rutherford's mansion house went up on the plantation before the Revolution. He then led a company as its captain in the campaigns of 1776 and 1777. The house stayed in the family, and in 1895 his great-grandchildren were still living in it.
- Farming at Rutherford stationThe railroad stop on the old plantation was known as Rutherford station, on the Philadelphia & Reading line near Harrisburg. When the Dauphin County encyclopedia came out in 1896, Abner Rutherford was farming there, on the land the family had bought in 1760.
