About Ryderwood, Washington
Ryderwood began in 1923 as a Long-Bell Lumber Company logging camp called Cougar Flats. It was named for W. F. Ryder, the company's logging operations manager. Long-Bell built it for families, with a school, church and theater. By 1953, old growth timber was gone, so Long-Bell sold Ryderwood to Harry H. Kem, who turned it into a retirement community.
After 1953, Ryderwood homeowners had to be retired. Residents ran the fire department, library and water system as volunteers. In 1956, the town built Ryderwood Lake, covering 6 acres inside a gravel pit.
