About San Carlos I, Texas
San Carlos I is a colonia of 187 people in Webb County, Texas, as counted in the 2020 census. Before the 2010 census, it became a census-designated place of its own, drawn from part of the Laredo Ranchettes CDP.
Many households here once hauled water home in summer heat over 100 degrees and kept what they drank in plastic tanks, concrete cisterns or 55-gallon drums. In 2000 the City of Laredo and Webb County planned to carry city water lines and sewer service out to 15 colonias, San Carlos among them. The Border Environment Cooperation Commission required two public meetings, and the first was held at San Carlos on June 1. Of the 190 people surveyed at the two meetings, 185 backed the project.
- A deacon on the committeeThe project's steering committee was formed on April 6, 2000. Deacon Gerardo Morales of the San Carlos Mission was one of its members.
- 87 homes connectedWebb County won a Colonia Economically Distressed Area Program grant from the Texas Department of Agriculture for San Carlos I and II. The money paid to hook houses up to the new water and sewer lines in both San Carlos colonias, as well as in D-5 Acres, Ranchitos 359 and Laredo Ranchettes. The grant was planned for 65 houses, but money left over let the county connect 87.
