About San Castle, Florida

San Castle is a community of 3,755 people in Palm Beach County, with the town of Lantana to the north and the city of Boynton Beach to the south. After World War II, this ground was put to use for mango plantations and for new houses as more people moved to South Florida. Most of the neighborhood was platted in the late 1950s as a subdivision of one-story homes built in the Florida Ranch style of the time.

San Castle never joined Lantana or Hypoluxo, and over the years it became a census-designated place of its own. During the 1980s and 1990s, its population grew more diverse, and the neighborhood became a hub of Caribbean-American culture in Palm Beach County.

  • Built on an ancient shorelineSan Castle stands on the Atlantic Coastal Ridge, an old line of beach and dunes from the Pleistocene, about 125,000 years ago. Seas then stood about 30 feet higher than they do now. The ridge began as a barrier island made of piled-up sand and coquina.
  • A rare patch of scrubThe ridge is high, and its sands drain well, so pieces of the Florida scrub still grow here. Scrub is among the rarest and most endangered plant communities in Palm Beach County, where less than 2% of it is left. The Hypoluxo Scrub Natural Area lies just to the east.
  • Jaega landBefore modern settlement, the high ground of the ridge belonged to the territory of the Jaega people. Just south of San Castle stood the Boynton Mound complex, an important Native site. Most of it was destroyed in the early 20th century, when its shell was dug out as fill to build Ocean Ridge.
