About Sandia Heights, New Mexico
Sandia Heights is a community of 3,273 people in Bernalillo County, at the western foot of the Sandia Mountains on the northern edge of Albuquerque. Its neighborhoods sit on ground that the Pueblo of Sandia has long claimed, because in 1748 an agent of the Spanish crown granted the Pueblo land here.
In 1864 the United States issued the Pueblo a patent for its grant. The Pueblo later argued that the surveyor had missed about 10,000 acres of the original Spanish land. When the Interior Department studied the claim in 1988, that land already held the Tierra Monte, Sandia Heights and Sandia Heights North subdivisions, home to more than 100 families.
- Settled by Congress in 2003The Pueblo took its claim to court in 1994, saying federal surveys had wrongly left land in the Cibola National Forest out of its grant. Congress ended the dispute in 2003 with a law creating the T'uf Shur Bien Preservation Trust Area from part of the forest. The law permanently protects the Pueblo's rights there and the public's long use of the land, and it keeps the Sandia Heights subdivisions outside the trust area.
- At the foot of the tramwaySandia Heights covers 1.9 square miles along the western edge of the Sandia Mountains, with Albuquerque on its southern border. The lower station of the Sandia Peak Tramway stands just past the community's northern edge.
