About Sandia, Texas

Fennell Dibrell and Max Starcke founded Sandia in 1907. They named it Sandia, the Spanish word for watermelon, because the area grew so many. Only one building stood when the streets were laid out. Every lot sold within eight months.

Sandia sits on land that Spain granted in 1807 to Juan Jose de la Garza Montemayor. It was called the Casa Blanca grant, and his family lived there until 1852. John L. Wade bought the tract in 1896 and built the Casa Blanca Ranch on it.
