About Santa Clara Pueblo, New Mexico
Santa Clara Pueblo is a community of 930 people in Rio Arriba County, on the Rio Grande about 1.5 miles south of Española. It is the home of a federally recognized tribe of Tewa Pueblo people and one of the 6 Tewa-speaking villages of northern New Mexico. Its land runs from the high country of the eastern Jemez Mountains down to the Rio Grande floodplains.
Archaeology shows Ancestral Puebloans in the region as far back as 1200 BC. Part of Francisco Coronado's force reached nearby Caypa Pueblo in 1541, and the Tewa met Juan de Oñate's party on July 11, 1598. Under Spanish rule a chapel stood here by 1617, and Fray Alonso de Benavides founded a mission in 1628. In 1680 the pueblo joined its neighbors in the Great Pueblo Revolt against Spain, and the empty chapel was destroyed. Two more chapels followed, and the present church replaced the last of them in 1918.
- The village of singing waterIn Tewa the pueblo is Khaˀpʼoe Ówîngeh, which translates as singing water village or rose water village, and it is also called the Village of Wild Roses. Its people speak Rio Grande Tewa, and the pueblo belongs to the Eight Northern Pueblos, with Ohkay Owingeh upriver to the north and San Ildefonso Pueblo to the south.
- A Spanish decree from 1713After the United States took over the region, the Act of July 22, 1854, called for a census of its new lands. When the government reviewed land titles, Santa Clara brought forward a royal order from the Spanish crown, issued on October 15, 1713, which shielded the pueblos' homelands from encroachment. The decree itself was later lost, but the research into it made Santa Clara one of the first pueblo communities recognized by Congress.
- Black and red potterySanta Clara is best known for its polished blackware and redware, cut with deep incised designs such as the knife-wing or eagle feather. Girls and women made most of the pottery in earlier times, and many men work at it now as well. Most pieces are decorated in one of four ways: painting, pressed patterns, incising, or resist-firing with incised or sgraffito designs.
- Smallpox in 1782An outbreak of smallpox swept through the pueblo in 1782 and killed a large share of its people.
