The image shows the largest open-pit copper mine in the world in Santa Rita, New Mexico. Copper was first discovered here in 1800. By 1900, significant developments were made by the Chino Copper Company. Ore is transported to Hurley for processing at a large smelter. This negative was created in May 1940 and belongs to the FSA/OWI Collection.
