About Sarcoxie, Missouri
Sarcoxie is a city in Jasper County, Missouri, with 1,406 residents recorded in the 2020 census. First known as Centerville, the community received its present name in 1839. Its history includes strawberry cultivation, commercial flower growing, and several recognized historic places.
- From Centerville to SarcoxiePlatted in the early 1830s as Centerville, the settlement was renamed in 1839 for Sarcoxie, a Delaware chief associated with a local spring.
- Strawberries and PeoniesThe town was once known as a strawberry center and is also identified with peonies and the Gilbert H. Wild flower-growing business.
- Schools and LibraryThe Sarcoxie R-II School District provides public education, and the community has the Sarcoxie Public Library.
