About Satsuma, Alabama

Satsuma is a city of 6,749 people in northeastern Mobile County, about 13 miles north of downtown Mobile. Before 1915 the place was known as Fig Tree Island. Its new name came from the satsuma orange, which Alabama farmers had grown since 1878, when the trees arrived from Japan as a gift from Emperor Meiji.

By 1910 the Pace Orange Orchard covered about 100 acres here with pecan and satsuma trees, and the groves were thriving when the town took the fruit's name. The good years did not last. From 1912 to 1924 cold snaps and citrus canker hurt the trees, and once the big pine forests north of town were logged off, nothing broke the winter winds. By 1924 the orange business had collapsed.

  • A packing house from 1922In 1918 the Satsuma Orange & Pecan Groves Company hired Norman E. McConaghy to manage its groves. In 1922 a packing house went up for the fruit, and that building still stands above Mac's Landing.
  • A city since 1959In 1959 Mobile County and the State of Alabama approved Satsuma's plans for a town charter. Residents chose their first city officials in the municipal election held on April 6, 1959.
  • Its own schools since 2012Residents had talked about leaving the Mobile County schools since around 2001. When the county put its new middle school in Axis, 12 miles away and outside the city limits, council member Tom Williams began pressing for a split. Voters approved a city school system on April 12, 2011, and it took over in 2012 with Robert E. Lee Elementary and Satsuma High School.
  • The Old Satsuma SchoolThe town's old school building now serves as its library. Alabama's Register of Landmarks and Heritage includes the building.
