About Saugerties South, New York

Saugerties South is a hamlet of 2,442 people in Ulster County, on the west bank of the Hudson River in the Town of Saugerties. It lies just south of Esopus Creek and the Village of Saugerties, and U.S. Route 9W runs through it. The hamlet is also known as Barclay Heights, after the man who built the village's mills and once owned all of this ground.

  • Henry Barclay's heightsHenry Barclay built the works that powered Saugerties' water mills and organized the village itself. He owned every acre of the rise south of the village, and in the late 1820s he turned it into a campus-like setting where the people with a stake in his businesses made their homes.
  • Open commons, then 1950s streetsBarclay's heights stayed open common land, with long views across the Hudson to the Catskills, well into the 20th century. In the 1950s subdivision streets were laid out over the old commons, and the neighborhood they formed still carries the Barclay Heights name.
  • Overbaugh LaneOverbaugh Lane, at the south edge of the village, honors John V. L. Overbaugh, who held more land than anyone else in Saugerties when Barclay came. Overbaugh served for many years as president of the new village during its first decade. Past the village line, his lane carries on into the subdivisions as Kalina Drive.
