About Sawgrass, Florida

Sawgrass is a community of 5,385 people in St. Johns County, on the southern half of San Pablo Island. On a safari in Africa in 1970, James Stockton Jr. pictured a golf resort like Ponte Vedra rising on this wild stretch of coast. His father was a principal of Stockton, Whatley, Davin & Co., a leading Southeast firm in mortgage banking, real estate and insurance. Back in Florida, Stockton bought 1,600 feet of ocean frontage, hired a golf course architect and an engineering firm, and broke ground in 1972.

Stockton nearly dropped the name Sawgrass, because the plant grows in mucky ground like the Everglades and its leaves have sharp, sawtoothed edges. He later said he settled on it after a restless night, taking it from the sawgrass that grew wild on his land.

  • From 140 sales to nineStockton remembered selling 140 units in the first year. In 1973, with the country in turmoil, sales fell to nine, and every dollar that came in went back into the project. The turnaround came when Jacksonville started building J. Turner Butler Boulevard, an expressway to the ocean just north of Ponte Vedra Beach, which cut the drive from the beaches to downtown in half.
  • 415 acres for one dollarPaul and Jerome Fletcher agreed to sell the PGA Tour 415 acres next to Sawgrass, asking just one dollar for the land. On it the Tour built TPC Sawgrass, the first of the Tournament Players Clubs. Sawgrass is home to The Players Championship, established in 1974, which pays the largest prize fund of any tournament in golf.
  • Paul Rudolph's last Florida houseArthur Milam, a young Jacksonville attorney, met the architect Paul Rudolph at a Harvard reunion. The Milams then hired Rudolph, who drew up their home at 1033 Ponte Vedra Boulevard in 1961. Finished in 1962, it turns a sculpted face of glass and concrete block, framed by massive sun screens, toward the Atlantic. It was the last house Rudolph designed in Florida and a turning point in his career, and the Arthur Milam House is now on the National Register.
