This vintage linen postcard captures a scene along the National Highway, U.S. 40, on the stretch between Hagerstown and Cumberland in western Maryland. The route follows the path of the historic National Road, the first major highway built by the federal government, which began at Cumberland, Maryland and opened the way west for generations of travelers.

From roughly the 1930s through the 1940s, American "linen" postcards reached their golden age, prized for their textured finish and vivid, saturated colors. This card comes from the work of Tichnor Bros. Inc. of Boston, whose archive survives today as the celebrated Tichnor Brothers Collection. This edition has been carefully restored and color-revived by KNOWOL.
