About Schuyler, Virginia
Screenwriter Earl Hamner was born in Schuyler in 1923 and grew up here. He drew on his childhood in a big rural family to create The Waltons for CBS. In 1992 the Walton's Mountain Museum opened in town to welcome fans of the show.
The community was first called Walker's Mill. In 1882 it was renamed for Schuyler George Walker, who ran a local mill and served as the first postmaster. Later a stone plant cut local soapstone into lab table tops, but the Great Depression ended that industry.
- The stone that built the townIn 1941, most people in Schuyler worked at quarrying and processing soapstone. The bed of soapstone stretched about 30 miles. The stone resists heat, keeps out water and is not harmed by acids.
