About Scott, Brown County, Wisconsin
Scott is a town of 3,636 people in Brown County, on the southeastern shore of Green Bay, the arm of Lake Michigan that borders it on the north. The city of Green Bay lies to its west and south. The old Town of Green Bay once covered this ground, until the Brown County Board of Supervisors decided in November 1859 to break it up into smaller towns, and Scott was one of the new towns that came out of that split.
Three names were put forward for the new town: Liberty, Pochequette and Scott. Robert Gibson, who became the first town chairman, liked Scott best, most likely because it reminded him of his homeland. The town is presumably named for Sir Walter Scott, the Scottish author.
- Jean Nicolet's landing, 1634The French explorer Jean Nicolet came ashore in 1634 at Red Banks, a spot west of Benderville that now lies in Scott. He was the first European to explore the land that later became the state of Wisconsin, and the Town of Scott counts that landing as the start of its story.
- One of Wisconsin's oldestBay Settlement, a crossroads community in the town, grew up in one of the oldest settled areas in Wisconsin. Only nearby Green Bay and De Pere, along with Prairie du Chien in the state's southwest corner, are older.
- More water than landScott covers 52.7 square miles, but only 18.1 square miles of that is land. The other 34.6 square miles are the waters of Green Bay, which gives the town a long shoreline and communities like Edgewater Beach on the bay.
