About Sedalia, Missouri
Sedalia, the seat of Pettis County in central Missouri, counted 21,725 residents in the 2020 census. Railroads shaped much of its early growth, and the community became a cattle-drive railhead after the Civil War. The city is home to the Missouri State Fair and the Scott Joplin International Ragtime Festival.
- Chartered in 1864Sedalia was incorporated in 1864, and its charter designated General Smith as the first mayor.
- Railroad and CattleThe railway arrived in January 1861, and about 260,000 cattle followed the trail to Sedalia during spring and summer 1866.
- Missouri's Carnegie FirstThe Sedalia Public Library received Missouri's first Carnegie grant, a $50,000 award announced in 1899, and its building was dedicated in 1901.
- Historic Third StreetThe railroad depot at 600 East Third Street entered the National Register in 1979, followed by the Sedalia Public Library in 1980.
- Fair and RagtimeThe Missouri State Fair has been held in Sedalia since 1901, and the city also hosts the Scott Joplin International Ragtime Festival.
