About Semmes, Alabama

Semmes is a city of 4,941 people in western Mobile County, about 15 miles northwest of downtown Mobile. It grew up around a rail line that served the Semmes Land Company, a timber and lumber business started in 1900. When the timber trade faded, local nurseries took its place, and the area became one of the country's major growers of azaleas and camellias.

On March 3, 2010, the Friends of Semmes and Incorporate Semmes groups gave Probate Judge Don Davis a petition to make part of the community a city. State rules on population density kept some neighborhoods out, and a few voters called the zig-zag boundary a gerrymander, but the measure passed on August 17, 2010, with 74.19% voting yes. After a count of residents, the judge declared Semmes incorporated on May 2, 2011, and Mobile withdrew its police, fire and planning authority from the area.

  • Named for an admiralThe town honors Raphael Semmes (1809 to 1877), pronounced "simz." He joined the United States Navy in 1826 and left it in 1861. He then served the Confederate side until 1865, and in those years he captained the CSS Alabama.
  • The 1902 schoolhouseThe one-room Semmes School of 1902, an Alabama Historical Landmark, is the state's oldest school still in continuous use. When the county school board planned to tear it down, former students, teachers and neighbors organized Alumni & Friends of Semmes School, Inc. in 1994. The board gave them a 99-year lease and moved the building back to its first site. Volunteers finished restoring it by 1998 and now show visitors a 1900s school day.
  • Malone ChapelBeside the schoolhouse in Semmes Heritage Park stands Malone Chapel, a copy of Mt. Pleasant Church, which once stood on the same ground. Couples rent it for weddings, and the money helps keep the park running.
  • A city council with no ballotsWhen the new city first chose its leaders, Judy Hale was the only person who filed for mayor, so she took office without an election. Exactly five people signed up for the five council seats: Teresa Bonner, Mary Calhoun, Jerry Shirey, Phillip Dodd and Dave Baker. All five were sworn in at the first council meeting on June 6, 2011.
