About Seneca, Nebraska

Work on the Burlington railroad halted for the winter of 1887 to 1888 in western Thomas County. Seneca was founded at that stopping point in January 1888. It became a division point with a depot, rail yard and roundhouse. More than 70 people worked there. For some years, Seneca was the largest town in the county.

Seneca reached a peak of 476 people in 1920. Later the railroad moved its operations away, and jobs and businesses were lost. Around 2013, a village rule banning horses in town set off a dispute. In May 2014, residents voted 17 to 16 to disincorporate the village.
