About Shandaken, New York
Shandaken is a town of 2,866 people on the northern border of Ulster County, northwest of Kingston. Its name is believed to come from an Esopus phrase meaning "land of rapid waters," though another translation gives "place of the hemlocks." Settlers first came around the time of the American Revolution, and the town was carved out of Woodstock in 1804.
Shandaken grew in 1809, when land from Neversink, a Sullivan County town, was added to it. Some of its own land later went into forming Denning, Hardenburgh and Olive. Before 1900, visitors had made tourism the town's main business, and it remains the most important part of the local economy. In 1900 the town counted 4,053 people.
- Phoenicia and the railroadPhoenicia, a hamlet in the eastern part of town, was the first community here to be linked to the outside world by rail, on the Ulster and Delaware Railroad. It was also the first to put up hotels for the tourist trade. The Phoenicia Railroad Station is now on the National Register.
- Slide Mountain, 4,180 feetThe whole town lies inside the Catskill Park, and all of it is mountainous. Slide Mountain, at 4,180 feet the highest peak in the Catskills, rises here. Oliverea, a hamlet founded in 1886, is home to the Winnisook Club, which sits at the foot of the mountain beside Winnisook Lake.
- Chichester's furniture tradeChichester, north of Phoenicia, was founded in 1863 and grew up around making furniture. The business carried the hamlet until the Depression destroyed it.
- Once called Grand Hotel StationHighmount, northwest of Pine Hill, was first called Summit and was also known as Grand Hotel Station. Mt. Tremper went by Ladew Corners and The Corner before it took its present name.
