About Shark River Hills, New Jersey
Shark River Hills is a community of 3,583 people in Neptune Township, Monmouth County. It sits on a wide peninsula, with the Shark River estuary along its east and south sides. The community began in 1923 as a summer resort, and the first lots went on sale on July 8 of that year. Its early advertising promised families a healthy place to bring up their children, surrounded by pine trees and fresh air.
- A new bridge in 1923The Tucker's Point Bridge was finished in 1923, the same year the resort opened. It doubled the number of ways to travel between Neptune City and Shark River Hills.
- The boardwalk lost in 1944In its resort years the Hills had a boardwalk of its own, stretching between the Club House and the Tucker's Point Bridge. The great hurricane of 1944 destroyed it, and nobody built it again. With the boardwalk gone, Shark River Hills was no longer a summer resort.
- The Cracker Barrel since 1925The Cracker Barrel store opened at the foot of Tuckers Bridge in 1925, two years after the first lots were sold. It has been a landmark there ever since.
- Property owners since 1929In 1929, six years after the resort opened, local homeowners set up a group of their own, the Shark River Hills Property Owners Association.
