About Sharon Springs, New York
The waters of Sharon Springs won wide fame for easing rheumatism and skin diseases. In 1836, a company of New York men built the Pavilion, a grand hotel on a rise close by. It drew sick people who came to try the waters and fashionable tourists seeking a summer home.
In the 1800s, Sharon Springs grew into a busy spa village around its sulfur, magnesia and other mineral springs. At its peak, the village drew 10,000 guests every summer, among them members of the Vanderbilt family. Oscar Wilde gave a lecture at the Pavilion Hotel on August 11, 1882.
- A Revolutionary War battleOn July 10, 1781, Colonel Marinus Willett led 150 American troops against about 300 British and Iroquois fighters camped in the Sharon Springs Swamp. Willett's men attacked in the dense swamp and killed 40. The raiders under John Doxtader fled, and the Battle of Sharon went down as an American win.
