About Shelton, Washington
Shelton is a city of 10,371 people and the seat of Mason County, and it is the westernmost city on Puget Sound. The Squaxin Island Tribe, known as the "People of the Waters," lived on and cared for this land for centuries and called the place Cota. The tribe gave it up, together with 4,000 square miles of Indigenous land, under the Treaty of Medicine Creek on December 26, 1854.
In March 1854, when the Washington Territorial Legislature met for the first time, David Shelton sat in its House as the member for Thurston County. After the treaty, he and his wife, Frances, each filed a claim under the Donation Land Claim Act, and their land came to 640 acres. The town that grew on those claims was incorporated in 1890 and took his name.
- Steamboats of the Mosquito FleetShelton was once served by small steamboats that belonged to Puget Sound's Mosquito Fleet. They included the Old Settler, the Irene, the Willie, the Marian, the Clara Brown, the City of Shelton and the S.G. Simpson.
- The mill on Oakland BayShelton earned its living from logging, farming, dairying, ranching and growing oysters. For years the Simpson Timber Company mill on Oakland Bay was the biggest sight in downtown. In 2015 the mill was sold to Sierra Pacific Industries, which is building a new mill.
- Christmastown, USASo many Christmas trees were grown around Shelton that the town called itself "Christmastown, USA." The name later came back as the title of a festival held every year.
- A new government in 2017Shelton held on to the mayor and commission form of government longer than any other city in Washington. In November 2017 its voters finally replaced it with a council and a city manager.
