About Shenango, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania
William Carins was one of the first settlers, arriving in 1796. He was paid for his Revolutionary War service with 500 acres here. Carins wove cloth and sold it in his small store. He gave the township its name, taken from the Shenango River.
In 1908 an interurban trolley line linked the township with New Castle, Ellwood and Pittsburgh. The Pittsburgh, Harmony, Butler and New Castle Railway ran until August 15, 1931. After that, buses took the place of the trolleys.
- The township grew in 2026In November 2024, voters in Shenango Township and South New Castle strongly backed dissolving the borough into the township. The merger became official on January 1, 2026.
