About Silver Springs, Florida
Silver Springs is a community of 2,844 people in Marion County, just northeast of Ocala. It grew up around a cluster of artesian springs that feed the Silver River, which flows 4 miles east to the Ocklawaha River. The community was founded in 1852, and travelers were already coming to see the springs before the Civil War.
Hullam Jones and Phillip Morrell fitted a pane of glass into a rowboat's bottom in the late 1870s, and the glass-bottom boat tours that grew from their idea made the springs famous around the world. Two partners, W. Carl Ray and W.M. "Shorty" Davidson, leased the land from Ed Carmichael in the 1920s and built the headwaters into an attraction with boat tours, rides and animal exhibits. The State of Florida took it over in 2013 and joined it with Silver River State Park to create Silver Springs State Park.
“Hart Line and Lucas Line steamboat companies competed for the privilege of transporting visitors to the headwaters of the Silver River, to the point of holding passenger-laden races upriver to the Springs!”
- Hollywood on the riverHollywood found Silver Springs in the 1930s. Over the years at least 20 movies shot scenes here, among them Rebel Without a Cause with James Dean, Distant Drums with Gary Cooper, the James Bond film Moonraker, six Tarzan pictures and Creature from the Black Lagoon.
- Paradise Park, 1949 to 1969Segregation kept African Americans out of Silver Springs, so in 1949 Paradise Park opened for them on the Silver River's south bank, about half a mile away. Eddie Leroy Vereen, once a boat captain, managed it until 1967. Visitors took glass-bottomed boat rides, swam at a crescent-shaped beach of white sand and could be photographed by Bruce Mozert, the underwater photographer. Each year it drew about 100,000 visitors, and it closed in 1969 after integration.
- The Princess Donna of 1934Of the glass-bottom boats from the attraction's early decades, only the Princess Donna, built in 1934, is still running. It now carries passengers on the Rainbow River in Dunnellon.
- Six Gun TerritoryOther attractions grew up near the springs. Six Gun Territory, a Western theme park with its own narrow-gauge railroad, ran from 1963 to 1984, and the Wild Waters park was open from 1978 to 2016.
