This vintage postcard captures a busy civic corner of Elkton, Maryland, showing the home of the Singerly Fire Company alongside the Cecil County Library and the Town Hall, where, as the caption proudly notes, marriage licenses were issued. That last detail is no accident: for much of the twentieth century, Elkton , the seat of Cecil County , was famous as a quick-marriage destination, drawing couples from neighboring states thanks to Maryland's lenient license laws.
From roughly the 1930s through the 1940s, American travelers mailed home millions of "linen" postcards, prized for their textured finish and bright, punchy colors. This card was published by Tichnor Bros. Inc. of Boston, one of the great names of that era and the source of the celebrated Tichnor Brothers Collection. This edition has been carefully restored and color-revived by KNOWOL, bringing back the vivid tones that made these cards so beloved.
