About Sioux Falls, South Dakota

Sioux Falls is a city of 192,517 people and the seat of Minnehaha County, built around the falls of the Big Sioux River. In 1856 two groups came to claim the land by the falls, drawn by its beauty and its waterpower. One was the Western Town Company from Dubuque, Iowa, and the other was a St. Paul firm, the Dakota Land Company. Each staked a 320-acre claim, but they worked together for safety and put up a turf wall they called "Fort Sod." Seventeen men stayed through that first winter, and by the next year the settlement had close to 40 people.

The Dakota War of 1862 spread across nearby southwestern Minnesota. After two local settlers were killed that August, the settlers and the soldiers posted in town left for Yankton, and the empty town was looted and burned. A military post, Fort Dakota, opened in what is now downtown in May 1865, and the old settlers slowly came back along with many newcomers. By 1873 the town had 593 people and a building boom, and it became a village in 1876. The Dakota Territorial legislature gave it a city charter on March 3, 1883.

  • Named for the fallsThe Dakota Land Company named the town for the falls of the Big Sioux River, which flows on to meet the Missouri just above Sioux City. The falls formed about 14,000 years ago, in the last ice age. Philander Prescott, who camped at them overnight in December 1832, is the first American of European descent known to have visited.
  • Boom years of the 1880sRailroads brought the Dakota Boom of the 1880s, and the city grew from 2,164 people in 1880 to 10,167 in 1889. A bad plague of grasshoppers and a national depression ended the boom by the early 1890s, and the city added only 89 people between 1890 and 1900. Good times came back after the John Morrell meat packing plant opened in 1909, next to stockyards that ranked among the largest in the nation.
  • The Divorce ColonyIn the 1890s Sioux Falls drew women seeking divorce. South Dakota had some of the most permissive divorce laws in the country, and the railroad made the city easy to reach. People called it the "Divorce Colony," and it stayed popular until the state changed its residency rules in 1908.
  • A high school turned arts centerWashington High School joined the National Register in 1986. The old building was renovated into the Washington Pavilion, which opened in 1999 with two performing arts spaces, a visual arts center and a science center. Its Egger Gallery holds the Northern Plains Tribal Arts collection, from a juried show started in Sioux Falls in 1988.
