About Skillman, New Jersey

Skillman is a community of 237 people in Montgomery Township, Somerset County. Family accounts say the Skillmans were Dutch, lived for a time in England, and settled in Brooklyn in 1664. In 1729 Thomas Skillman headed west and bought about 500 acres of farmland on the Millstone River near Rocky Hill for his sons, Jan and Isaac, and that purchase brought the family to Montgomery.

The place took the family name when the railroad came through. In 1875 the Delaware and Bound Brook Railroad, later part of the Reading, opened depots at Skillman, Harlingen and Belle Mead. While crews laid the track, their horses sank in heavy clay mud, so a teamster named Joseph A. Skillman brought his mules from Missouri to pull them through. Railroad officials also visited the home of another Skillman close by, and the company named its new station for the family.

  • A village around the depotA post office opened inside the station, and a small village grew up around it with a hay press, a feed store and a hardware store, all carrying the Skillman name. The station is gone now, but some of the old village buildings still stand where Camp Meeting Avenue meets Skillman Road, and a clay and sculpting supply business uses part of them.
  • The State Village for EpilepticsIn 1898 a facility for treating epilepsy went up on farmland between Blawenburg and Skillman. The New Jersey State Village for Epileptics opened around 1900 on 250 acres, with its own dairy, laundry and movie theater, and visitors reached it by train. It was later called the North Princeton Developmental Center, or Skillman Village, and in 2011 Montgomery Township sold what was left of it to Somerset County so the buildings could be demolished.
  • From farms to suburbsMontgomery Township counted 1,637 residents in 1910, when Skillman was a busy country stop. Today the township has more than 23,000 people, fewer farms and many new housing developments. The Skillman mailing address covers about half of the township's 32 square miles, and every public elementary, middle and high school in Montgomery sits inside it.
