About Sleeping Buffalo, Montana
Sleeping Buffalo is a community of 12 people in the eastern part of Phillips County, Montana. It rests on an upland, with Nelson Reservoir lying north of it and the Beaver Creek valley spreading out to the south. The Sleeping Buffalo Rock historic site stands 1.5 miles away, beside U.S. Route 2, and the hot springs here were named for that revered stone.
- A stone shaped like a bullThe rock first rested on a ridge above the Cree Crossing of the Milk River. Its shape calls to mind a bull buffalo lying down, and since late prehistoric times native peoples have honored the spiritual power they found in it.
- An oil search in 1922In 1922 a man drilling for oil here hit a huge flow of hot mineral water rather than crude. The find became Sleeping Buffalo Hot Springs, where the water fills 3 pools that run from 90 to 106 degrees Fahrenheit.
