About Sleepy Eye, Minnesota
Sleepy Eye is a city of 3,452 people in Brown County, Minnesota. It takes its name from the lake beside it, and both honor Ish-tak-ha-ba, a chief of the Lower Sisseton Sioux whose name means sleepy eyes. Only his left eye drooped, so the name dropped its plural.
The town was platted on September 18, 1872, and grew into a railway junction in Home township. Residents incorporated it as a village on February 14, 1878, and it became a city in 1903.
- A chief in Washington, 1824Chief Sleepy Eye was one of four Sioux leaders sent to the nation's capital to meet President James Monroe in 1824. His advice led traders to build Mankato off the flood ground, and he later settled his people near the lake that bears his name.
- The treaty of 1851In 1851 Chief Sleepy Eye had a key role in the Treaty of Traverse des Sioux. Under that treaty the U.S. government received all the land but a 10-mile strip on each side of the upper Minnesota River.
- The chief's grave by the depotThe chief's death came in South Dakota. Long afterward his remains were dug up and brought back to Sleepy Eye, where they were buried again next to a museum housed in the town's old depot. A monument marks the grave today.
- Among the state's top flour townsThe 1916 county history reported that Sleepy Eye's flour mills had, until recently, ranked about second or third in output in all of Minnesota, then the great flour state. The Sleepy Eye Milling Company joined the National Register in 1991.
- On Little House on the PrairieIn the television series, Charles Ingalls sometimes made deliveries to Sleepy Eye, shown as the nearest larger town to Walnut Grove, where the Ingalls family lived. Later in the series the show placed the blind school run by Mary Ingalls and her husband, Adam Kendall, in Sleepy Eye.
