About Smith Mills, Massachusetts
Smith Mills is a village of 4,832 people in the town of Dartmouth, in Bristol County, on the Paskamansett River. Henry Tucker and George Babcock built Dartmouth's first grist mill on the riverbank here, and farmers from around the town brought their grain to be ground. Early photographs of the village show an old granite mill building standing on State Road.
- Named for Elisha SmithElisha Smith bought the mill and its works in 1706. A neighborhood was growing up around the mill, and soon afterward people began calling it Smith Mills, the name it still carries.
- Dartmouth's first Town HouseSmith Mills became one of Dartmouth's earliest commercial centers, home to a number of businesses. Around 1714 the town's first Town House stood in the village, and townspeople met there to hold their town meetings and handle the rest of the town's government business.
