About Smoketown, Pennsylvania
Smoketown was built entirely on the Gibbons tract near Mill Creek. James Gibbons built a mill there, and his home served as an inn during the Revolutionary War. That house burned in 1837. A stone saved from the first house on that tract carries his name and is dated 1757.
Early settler James Smith could see deer from present-day Smoketown clear to New Strasburg. The land had no heavy timber then. Once settlers took up the land, forests grew over it.
- The founding families of the villageThe first settlers around Smoketown were English and Welsh immigrants. They came into the Conestoga country in 1715. Among them were Peter Ballas, William Evans and James Smith.
