About Social Circle, Georgia
Social Circle is a city of 4,974 people in southern Walton County, and part of it reaches over the line into Newton County. It lies 45 miles east of Atlanta. The settlement was incorporated as a town in 1869 and became a city in 1904, and today it takes in a historic district of 132 acres.
No one knows for certain where the unusual name came from. Local tradition says people of the settlement once gave water to a worn-out traveler, who replied that this was surely a social circle. The city also records that an early settler came from another village that already went by that name.
- A railroad townCSX Transportation runs a line maintenance facility out of the city's railroad station. For years the railyard held a concrete coaling tower, one of only a few still standing in the southeastern United States. The tower came down sometime after June 2022 and was gone by February 2023.
- Its own school districtThe Social Circle City School District serves the whole city, from pre-school through twelfth grade. It has a pair of elementary schools along with one middle school and one high school, and its 90 full-time teachers work with more than 1,448 students.
- Social Circle on screenMost of the filming for Jerry and Marge Go Large, a Paramount+ movie, took place in Social Circle. The city is also the setting of The Exorcism of Cindy Sauer, an episode from the fifth season of A Haunting on the Discovery Channel, with its story placed here in 2010.
