About the Village of Somerset, Wisconsin

Somerset is a village of 3,019 people in St. Croix County, on the Apple River. General Samuel Harriman, who served in the Union Army, gave the place its name, choosing Somerset, England, the place his father had called home. The village grew up as a rough logging town, and it sits inside the Town of Somerset.

Cranberry bogs once spread along the south side of the village, because its hills hold many ponds, sloughs, swamps and bogs. During Prohibition those same wet spots supplied the water for moonshine, and Somerset became a source of bootleg liquor for St. Paul and Minneapolis. Once Prohibition ended, local people went back to logging and farming.

  • Organized in 1856The Town of Somerset was organized on Sept. 19, 1856. Thomas J. Chappell served as chairman of its board of supervisors, according to W. H. C. Folsom's Fifty Years in the Northwest.
  • Tubing the Apple RiverThe Apple River flows right through Somerset, and campgrounds and tubing businesses line its banks. Local outfitters rent out tubes and give floaters rides, which brings summer crowds to the river.
  • Summer at the amphitheaterConcerts fill the Somerset Amphitheater every summer. Kenny Chesney, Ozzy Osbourne and Slipknot have headlined its stage, and so have The Lumineers, Pretty Lights, The Avett Brothers and Hootie and the Blowfish. Somerset has also played host to the Border Battle Beer Fest, and to the Tough Mudder.
  • Pea Soup Days every JuneEach June the village celebrates Pea Soup Days in Village Park, with a carnival, a parade and a band playing late into the night.
