About South Milwaukee, Wisconsin

South Milwaukee is a city of 20,795 people in Milwaukee County, on the western shore of Lake Michigan about 5 miles south of Milwaukee. The South Milwaukee Company laid out the town in 1891 on land in the Town of Oak Creek. Its founders meant it to compete with Milwaukee as an industrial suburb, and they named it for its place south of the larger city.

The new town incorporated as a village in 1892 and grew as a streetcar suburb of Milwaukee. In the early 1900s, newcomers from England and Germany made up much of its population.

“Two third-generation residents of the area, William Williams and Fred Mansfield, inherited hundreds of acres just as Milwaukee investors were looking for opportunities throughout Milwaukee County. Williams and Mansfield joined forces with Fred Rogers to form the South Milwaukee Company. In the process, they transformed Oak Creek into South Milwaukee.”
Encyclopedia of Milwaukee, 2018
  • Shovels for the Panama CanalSouth Milwaukee was the home base of Bucyrus International, first known as Bucyrus-Erie. The company built huge shovels and dragline excavators, and its shovels helped dig the Panama Canal. It also built Big Muskie, the largest mobile earth-moving machine in the world. In November 2012 Caterpillar Mining bought the company for $8.6 billion.
  • Passenger trains until 1971For decades, travelers caught trains at the South Milwaukee Passenger Station. Passenger service ended in 1971, and the old depot joined the National Register in 1978. Union Pacific freight trains still run through the city.
  • Grant Park on the lakeGrant Park lies inside the city limits and is run by Milwaukee County as one of its parks. It has an 18-hole golf course, tennis courts and a swimming beach. The Oak Leaf bike trail passes through the park, and the Seven Bridges Hiking Trail follows the Lake Michigan shore.
