About South Tucson, Arizona
South Tucson is a city of 4,613 people in Pima County, covering about 1.027 square miles with Tucson surrounding it on every side. In 1936 Tucson officials moved to annex the land along south Sixth Avenue between 25th Street and the Veterans Hospital, which then lay outside the Tucson city limits.
Owners of auto courts and other property on that stretch hoped to avoid Tucson's steeper taxes on business and its building codes. To block the annexation, they petitioned the county supervisors to call a vote on forming a town of their own, and on August 10, 1936, residents approved incorporation, 52 to 35.
- A fight over waterTucson told people in South Tucson who used its water that they needed Tucson building permits, or their taps would be shut off. The new council charged Tucson Water a $500 franchise fee each year, and Tucson said it would stop serving the town within 120 days. On January 18, 1938, after residents handed the county 258 petition signatures, the supervisors dissolved South Tucson.
- Reincorporated in 1939Supporters began a new incorporation drive soon after the town was dissolved. A second election was held on March 27, 1939, and South Tucson came back as a town by seven votes, 70 to 63.
- Surrounded since 1956In 1956 Tucson Mayor Hummel invited South Tucson to merge with the larger city. South Tucson never answered, so the Tucson City Council called a meeting without warning and annexed the land on every side of it. In the 1990s Tucson handed over a 25-acre strip between the city and Interstate 10, which gave South Tucson its present size.
- The President's PlateMexican restaurants on South Fourth Avenue have drawn diners for years. President Bill Clinton ate lunch at Mi Nidito in 1999, and the restaurant still lists "the President's Plate" among its dishes.
