About South Union, Pennsylvania
South Union is a township of 10,890 people in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, and its village of Hopwood sits beside steep green hills. Hopwood was founded in 1791. When the National Road was created in 1806, the village grew into a major rest stop for travelers heading both east and west.
- Over Chestnut RidgeFor decades after 1806, thousands of people used the National Road to cross Chestnut Ridge on their way between the East and the Midwest. Hopwood served travelers going in both directions. That stream of road traffic lasted until the railroads arrived in the 1850s.
- Old taverns of HopwoodSouth Union still has its old taverns. The Hopwood-Miller Tavern, the Monroe Tavern and the Morris-Hair Tavern all joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.
