About Spanish Fork, Utah

Spanish Fork is a city of 42,602 people in Utah County, in the Utah Valley between the Wasatch Range and Utah Lake. Its name goes back to 1776, when two Spanish Franciscan friars, Francisco Atanasio Domínguez and his companion Silvestre Vélez de Escalante, followed its stream down the canyon while searching for a trail from Santa Fe to the California missions. Latter-day Saint settlers came in 1851. William Pace and a few others started farms in the river bottoms, called the Upper Settlement, while a larger group gathered at the Lower Settlement.

In 1852 George A. Smith laid out a townsite called Palmyra west of today's center, and settlers built a fort and a school there. Brigham Young came in person to warn them to fortify, but they paid little attention, so the Walker War found them nearly defenseless a few weeks later. They then built defenses, lived under martial law and put every man in the militia. In the fall of 1854 they raised the Old Fort where the city now stands, and on January 17, 1855, the legislature chartered Spanish Fork City. Its first election, in May 1855, made Matthew Caldwell mayor.

  • Iceland's first American homePioneers from Iceland arrived between 1855 and 1860, which made Spanish Fork the first lasting Icelandic settlement in the United States. They built a Lutheran church on the east bench. The Icelandic Association of Utah, founded in 1897, still holds Iceland Days each June, the month of Iceland's National Day on June 17.
  • The Old Fort of 1854The Old Fort enclosed a space 100 by 60 feet, longer from north to south, behind walls twenty feet high and two feet thick. Its only entrance, on the south side, had two heavy folding gates sixteen feet tall, made of doubled two-inch planks. The next spring a survey laid out nine blocks, with two main streets eight rods wide running toward the four directions.
  • The Thurber School of 1910Spanish Fork built its first schoolhouse in 1862, and that single room served the town for nearly 50 years. In 1910 the city built the Thurber School on Main Street, which now holds city offices and joined the National Register in 2024.
  • Treaty of Spanish Fork, 1865The 1865 Treaty of Spanish Fork carries the city's name. Following an executive order from President Abraham Lincoln, the Utes were forced out and sent to the Uintah Basin.
  • Nine turbines since 2008The Spanish Fork Wind Project was finished in September 2008. Its nine turbines can make up to 18.9 megawatts at full output, enough to power up to 6,000 homes.
