About the City of Sparta, Wisconsin
Sparta is a city of 10,025 people and the seat of Monroe County, set along the La Crosse River. The land here belonged to the Ho-Chunk until they ceded it in 1837. After government surveyors mapped it in 1849, two early state roads crossed at this spot, one from Prairie du Chien to Hudson and, by 1851, another from Portage to La Crosse.
Brothers Frank and William Petit, the first settlers on record, opened a tavern near that crossroads in 1851, and their mother gave the place the name of the ancient Greek city-state. A post office followed in 1852, and in 1854 the legislature made Sparta the seat of the new Monroe County. The La Crosse and Milwaukee Railroad reached town in 1858, and the Chicago and North Western followed in 1873.
“The Sparta Watchman was established at Sparta in the spring of 1855 by Milton Montgomery and J. D. Condit. This was prior to the entrance of any railroads into the county and the printing outfit obtained at Beaver Dam was brought to Sparta by wagon.”
- Mineral water and millsThe La Crosse River and nearby creeks turned the wheels of Sparta's early sawmills and gristmills. In the 1860s residents drilled artesian wells for mineral water and began promoting the town as a health resort, and later in the century a range of small manufacturers set up shop here.
- A banker as first mayorMr. Tyler joined the Bank of Sparta when it opened in 1858. He held the job of vice president there between 1865 and 1883, then led the bank as president from 1883 until his death. He also spent four years as president of the village, and when Sparta became a city, voters chose him as its first mayor.
- A courthouse from 1895Sparta's first Monroe County courthouse went up in 1863. The county replaced it in 1895 with the present building, and the Monroe County Courthouse joined the National Register in 1982.
- Army ground since 1905The Army began buying land near Sparta for training grounds in 1905 and again in 1909. That camp grew into Fort McCoy, which carries the name of Robert Bruce McCoy of Sparta, and it became one of the biggest supports of the city's economy.
- The first rail trailIn 1967 the old Chicago and North Western route into Sparta reopened as the Elroy-Sparta State Trail, counted as the nation's first rail trail. The 32-mile path runs through farm country and three tunnels, so Sparta calls itself the "Bicycling Capital of America." Ben Bikin', a giant rider on a penny-farthing at the entrance to town, holds the title "World's Largest Bicyclist."
