About Spencerport, New York
Spencerport is a village of 3,685 people in the town of Ogden, Monroe County, on the Erie Canal west of Rochester. Daniel Spencer bought a farm here in 1804, about a mile and a half north of Ogden Center. The canal was later dug right through his land at the Canawaugus Road, the farm was sold off as the first village lots, and the landing that grew up there in 1825 was known as Spencer's Basin.
Boats loading lumber, grain and fruit soon turned the landing into a busy shipping point. People began shortening its name to just the Basin, and because the canal already had plenty of basins, the village leaders changed it to Spencerport. The state legislature incorporated the village on April 22, 1867, and William Slayton was elected its first mayor.
- A library from 1815The Ogden Farmers' Library got its start inside a store in 1815, and by 1945 only three free libraries in New York were older. It had gone quiet by 1876 and stayed that way until 1908, when it was reorganized and brought into the canal village.
- Dorothy Thompson's first pulpitAround 1910 the Methodist Conference sent the Rev. Peter Thompson to the Spencerport Methodist Church. Once, when he was sick, his daughter Dorothy came home from college and preached in his place. Years later she became famous for speaking to many audiences, and this congregation was among the earliest to hear her. The church joined the National Register in 2008.
- A museum in a trolley stationThe village keeps its local history in the Spencerport Depot and Canal Museum, which also serves as a visitors center. It occupies a restored station that once served the RLBRR trolley line.
